Peer Intervention for Preschoolers with Autism (PIPA)

Over the course of this multi-site study, 120 preschoolers with autism will be recruited to participate in local preschools in the Kansas City metro area and local preschools across North Carolina. Two peer partners are recruited for each child with autism; and one special education team member will be trained as lead interventionist and implement the communication intervention called Stay-Play-Talk.

Peer Interventions

Research evidence supports peer interventions increase communication and social skills for children with autism. When implementing peer-mediated interventions, peers are guided by adults to prompt communication and social behaviors during structured play activities.

"I think it’s a great way to really learn more about how you can involve peers… How can we get peers to encourage communication? I’m sure a lot of preschool programs have these peers, so it’s not just about the peers showing these skills, it’s putting that into action and giving them the tools and strategies."
