Peer Intervention for Preschoolers with Autism (PIPA)
PIPA is a multi-site research study focused on improving the social communication skills of young autistic children using peer-mediated interventions in preschool and early elementary settings.
This study is a collaborative effort between researchers at the University of Kansas and the University of North Carolina, partnering with schools, educators, and families to implement evidence-based practices in educational settings.
Peer Interventions
Research supports peer-mediated interventions as an effective way to improve communication and social skills in children with autism. During these interventions, adults prompt peers to encourage social interactions and communication during structured play activities.

"I think it’s a great way to really learn more about how you can involve peers… How can we get peers to encourage communication? I’m sure a lot of preschool programs have these peers, so it’s not just about the peers showing these skills, it’s putting that into action and giving them the tools and strategies."
